Winter blues

As the sun sets on another day I realise I need to be more content with everything I have rather than the things I have lost. While openly embracing change and falling into the unknown I had lost the sense of familiarity I had grown used to each day. It is a challenge to settle into the life I have now and I far too often forget why I started and what I had always imagined I could have when freedom was unattainable. With every new land I visit, becoming a part of the path I journey, I find myself looking back and revisiting the connection I once had.

This winter has been a long, dark and cold one beginning to almost test us, ‘If the sun, our source of light does not shine then how do we mark the beginning and the end of the day?’ or moreso, 'Is there any hope in tomorrow?'

I found myself working quite hard through the chilly days, reserving myself for the indoors where I could just amp up the heater and snuggle in with a hot drink. In a way, slowly isolating myself from those around me. It became almost difficult to make my way outside to events or even try to find sports and social events for Winter.

Making brighter days

Even if it was to go see a movie with a friend, buy tickets to see a band which has forever been on your wish list or signing up to the gym; I knew it would be worthwhile. So on I went, despite my random ongoing colds and the inviting downtime I could have. I found myself making friends in the windiest weather, checking up on others, trying out the gym and watching the radiant sunset from my car. The longing I had for soaking up the sunshine each day started to slip away as I treasured the light I found in other places.

Each day felt more fulfilled as I found a new source of light where I could find happiness, warmth and laughter in new places. Practicing this daily made me feel more aware and for what I have.

As the last weeks unravel in this years Winter:

  1. Focus on following the source of light in your life- whether it be a friend, family member, interest or hobby,

  2. Find as many ways you can be more appreciative such as, making new upbeat or calming playlists, going to a bonfire party or calling a friend.

May you continue find more sunshine in these weeks ahead.
